After months of competition and 1.5 million votes cast, Canadian boogie rock revivalists the Sheepdogs have become the first unsigned band ever to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone.
The ‘Dogs took home the grand prize for Rolling Stone’s “Do You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star” contest, beating out 15 other bands. In addition to seeing their messy rocker do’s splashed across the cover of the August 18th issue of the magazine (on newsstands this Friday), the Sheepdogs have also been given a contract with Atlantic Records.
But don’t be fooled by Sheepdogs’ groovy, harmonic, neo-psychedelic sound – the guys tell Rolling Stone’s Austin Scaggs that making it big didn’t come easy.
“Shit was bleak,” says frontman Ewan Currie. “I saw high school friends get jobs and get married and become adults, and I’m still pursuing this artistic dream where I have no money, no assets and a shitty car I can’t even afford to register.”
